WHAT IS A HOBBY?

A hobby is in general terms an activity that one enjoys doing in their leisure. It could be anything, from reading a book,to hiking,to sleeping,to smoking, provided its fun to the person.
The importance of a hobby is chiefly to help in better time management by spending one's spare time doing something they enjoy, hence entertaining themselves and taking a break from strenuous and boring routine work. Most people like to have hobbies which add value to their lives, and it makes sense when you think about it.Say you have a garden,if you make gardening your hobby then you'll end up with a beautiful backyard, hence an improvement in your life as your home looks more..well..homely.Stamp collecting is one of the most famous hobbies and the reason most people have fallen to it sometime or other in life, myself included,is two fold. For one stamps are educational-you can learn names of places birds etc-and two is that they are commercially profitable as some people can pay alot for a rare stamp. In other words stamp collecting as a hobby adds value to one life, hence its appeal to many.Needless to say though, technology, emails in particular, have made stamp collecting less novel as people think less in terms of letters nowadays.A non beneficial hobby would be counting cars passing by the nearby road,or sleeping for the sheer thrill of it,because neither is better than lazying through life.
Some hobbies are inborn, while most are cultivated. The former case is where you do something you like doing in your free time for no particular reason except that you enjoy it.For instance you may draw because you like drawing,or write poems, like myself, because you enjoy doing so.People cultivate hobbies because they want to spend their spare time doing particular things eg photography, hence one develops a taste for it.Bottom line:inborn or cultivated a hobby should be both fun and beneficial.
The internet has come with its own fair share of new hobbies as well, and today ,one can say that playing a war game or chatting on facebook is their hobby. However the fundamentals of the subject haven't changed, and so if a hobby results to more time wastage than value gain, then it should be ditched, because, again thanks to modernity,we cant afford to waste time on non-beneficial hobbies in as competitive a world as ours.
