KONYEKI'S DAY; KONYEKI'S JOURNEY

Apart from occasional barking of dogs, everything else was quiet. The silence could make someone mistake the place for a graveyard. However, there were people; in fact, more than enough but they were all asleep. However, one person was still awake. Despite resting his tired body on the bed as hard as a railway line for hours, Konyeki could not sleep since he kept on remembering a time when he had hopes for a bright future .

It had never crossed his mind that he would search for employment without  luck. He even had dreams of becoming a land owner at a young age. Sadly he was not in his house or his father's house but was a visitor to a generous friend. Kind Nding'uri had allowed Konyeki to stay in his home while he looked for employment in the  city.

The room was dark since it was in the wee hours of the night. Only sunlight would have the power to melt the thick darkness at dawn. Konyeki's prayer was that light would appear and rid him of the darkness in his life. Konyeki's mind drifted back to the days he sent an application letter to various colleges seeking to enroll in a business course. He had self-belief and confidence that he would do dairy farming and sell milk. He believed that a business course would open doors for him into getting a life he had dreamed of. Since his school grades were impressive, he soon got an admission letter to a prestigious university. He could not contain his excitement and as soon as he received the news he decided to go and inform his father. He informed him of the good news he had received but his hopes sunk when his father stayed silent. Suddenly, the old man's face looked older than his actual age. Quietly he said, "Son, education at Fahari University costs a lot of money. After my retirement, I cannot afford to pay for it, so just forget about the course". These words pierced Konyeki's heart. How could not believe his father 'Miano Wa Konyeki' famous for conquering everything could contemplate defeat. Nothing had ever shaken his confidence.

Konyeki wished he could strangle the neck of whoever created the "animal" called retirement even though he knew he was already dead. His tongue felt heavy  and words could not form themselves in his mouth. Suddenly hot tears rolled down his cheeks despite attempts to fight them back. Miano could not withstand the sight of his son crying and decided to find a solution. "Your life seems to depend on that course, so I  will sell my cattle to pay for your education, but you must pay me back by passing and ensuring that you graduate. No room for failure like our neighbour's son". Miano said with a firm but serious tone. Konyeki was still overwhelmed but managed to whisper  "thank you." To his father. He still could not comprehend what retirement could do.
